Jobot Coffee & Diner
for grunge and games
The artist may have left, but the local artistry has stuck around, along with local food and drink. When walking into JoBot, a sense of home is not uncommon. Surrounded by a brick wall where a fireplace used to burn and local art around the shop, collaboration and local tastes come to mind.
Tables are scattered throughout the restaurant and outside below large umbrellas. Most tables inside are complimented by beer bottles with JoBot’s name on them and a flower in the middle. People will be seen with their dog outside, talking with friends, baristas or sitting quietly doing homework. The late nights may be quiet, or packed with socializing people on the weekends. Music can be any playlist imaginable, inviting new sensations or familiar sounds to JoBot.
The main reason for coming to JoBot, though, may be the Food and Drink. Coffee is less expensive than Starbucks, but more than your average Dunkin’ Doughnuts trip. However, that’s not to say it’s on the same level as either of them. Utilizing local roasted beans from Cartel, each latte and foam are shaped and designed by baristas behind the counter. Many people, as seen on social media, have favorite baristas and favorite drinks when visiting JoBot. Drinks can be powerful and the jolt of energy needed, or in the case of most lattes, will be smooth. Flavors are powerful, especially in the case of the Chai Tea latte. [Insert Coffee Photo Here] Tea and cold drinks are shown to be a must, especially in Phoenix’s hot summer, which they have in abundance next to their hot specialties. Pastries can complement a drink, but JoBot’s food is beyond the simple scone.
The menu for Food surrounds crepes, breakfast, salads and sandwiches. The first menu item and possibly the most important, is the crepes. Sixteen crepes pack the menu, and are served with toppings and garnishes that make the folded crepe feel like more. Sweet, classic and savory crepes make up the three sections, hosting a majority of the menu. Each dish is served on a plate that could be in a house, giving each dish more of a home-like feel with out the home-like mess-ups.
JoBot Coffee & Dining hosts the feeling of Roosevelt Row with the warm comfort of home. Open until midnight daily, and 24 hours on weekends, this shop on 5th street and Roosevelt in Phoenix hosts people from all walks of life.
JoBot came from the mind of John Sagasta, who began selling coffee weekday mornings on 5th street, according to JoBot. Eventually good coffee on a street can only go so far, which is why Sagasta ended up settling in one of the many 1930s bungalows downtown. The space, once shared by an artist grew into the full bungalow for seating.
